Cascata delle Marmore

The Marmore falls is the largest man-made waterfall in the world. It has been built by ancient Romans in 271 BC, to divert the stagnant waters on the cliff near Marmore into the Nera river in the valley. The wetlands reappeared in the Middle Ages due to lack of maintenance and the Popes decided to make new works and gave the falls their present look. The falls are now part of a hydroelectric power plant, the water flow usually for a couple of hours a day, some more in the weekends, so before going to visit Marmore be sure the water is flowing when you will be there. It is really a nice experience, with museums and information all over the route and a wonderful glance at the flora and the water. Parking is available both at the top and at the bottom, I suggest to park in the bottom and start the route from there. And don’t forget, a lot of droplets are in the air, wear like you are trying to enter a hurricane ;)
